Mulgara - Geographical Distribution
Prior to colonisation, the Mulgara was widespread
across most of arid Australia, but post colonisation has seen a marked
decrease in both population numbers and distribution.
The
Mulgara currently inhabits a region ranging from South West Queensland,
through the Northern Territory and South Australia to the Central and
Central-Western regions of Western Australia, with a couple of isolated
pockets.
Although the range of the Mulgara is quite large, the
density across that area is quite low, with local communities inhabiting
the Spinifex clumps across the arid sandy region.
The main populations appear to be found in the
Northern Territory and Western Australia at present, with the main
presence being in the Pilbara, Tanami Desert and Great Sandy Desert.
The distribution of Mulgaras at any one time appears
to be affected by local rainfall, which of course also affects the
available food sources. However, predation by introduced animals such as
dogs, cats and foxes, along with the encroachment on available habitat
by pastoral activities, will also have an affect.
